Start of my journey: the start of yours

ABOUT ME

I knew from a very young age that journalism would always play an important part of my life. In 2012, I was having surgery for my disability known as Cerebral Palsy and had to recover for three months. during that time, I questioned who I was and what I could do with my life. I know it sounds crazy, but growing up with a disability and coming from Chicago was a battle in its own way. It made me question so much because I never could fit in with people who were not like me.Whether I was being judged or just didn't get along with them, there was always a barrier in between me and friendship. One day a coach came into the hospital and had me push around in a sports chair and I not only loved it, but I felt at home. After being discharged, My mom got a call asking if I would be at practice soon from the coach. With so much joy in my eyes, I begged her to let me go. Fast forward a few weeks later.  I started playing Wheelchair Basketball after a long recovery from surgery . I started to meet a lot of people like me and that gave me a space to be myself and branch out socially. After a year of playing, I fell in love with the sport. After 7 years of playing, I realized I could make a difference in the world with my public speaking and could use my experience of being an athlete to create change in the adaptive sports world. In 2020 during the midst of the pandemic, I committed to the University Of Illinois to continue playing wheelchair basketball but also to pursue an education. Since going to college, I haven’t looked back since.

4 years later, I have graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S in Journalism, with double minors in PR & Communications. None of this would be possible without wheelchair basketball. Over my time there, I have been all over the place. From being a full time student athlete, to being a Brand Consultant Manager for the Department of Advertising, to being a Live Productions Assistant for Fighting Illini Productions, To even coming out of my comfort zone and working for Motorola Solutions as their Communication Specialist, my time in college has been memorable to say the least.

Save my Social Media is focused on highlighting some of the work that I have done throughout this journey and I want to bring you guys along as I continue to grow my content and provide you with advice along the way!

Illinois Softball is up and coming to be a huge power force in the Big Ten for years. One thing that keeps them together through the good and bad times? Their chemistry. I had the pleasure to interview Paige Berkemeyer as she talked about her experience at the University Of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Her upbringing, and so much more!
